RIDER MEMBERS

Sulis Scorpions Youth Cycling Club is open to all youth riders between the age of 6 and 18 years old.

ROUTES TO MEMBERSHIP

Induction Course

Most riders join our regular coaching sessions on Saturday mornings after completing an initial 3-week induction course. As we only offer 2 or 3 induction groups per year, you may need to join our ‘waiting list’ for a few months until we can offer an induction place. Once this is completed, the standard membership fee is £15/month. Full induction course, joining and membership information is provided below.

To request a place on the waiting list, a parent can use the contact form, selecting the Membership Enquiry option, from this page Contact Us. We will then send you a link for you to join our membership platform Coacha.

Trials

For experienced riders (competing in triathlons or who have club or group riding experience) and are 12 years or older, we arrange a trial session with our Head Coach one Saturday morning. If this is successful trialists will be offered a place in one of our Saturday groups.

To request a trial, a parent can use the contact form, selecting the Membership Enquiry option, from this page Contact Us. We will then send you a link for you to join our membership platform Coacha.

This Girl Can

We offer regular ‘This Girl Can session’ for girls aged 6+ to try cycling with the club. We hope that riders who enjoy these ‘taster’ sessions will go on to join the club via either the Induction Course or these sessions can be used a trial for girls aged 12 or above. After the first taster TGC session, riders can continue to join TGC until they complete the Induction Course.

To join a This Girl Can! taster session a parent can use the contact form, from this page Contact Us. We will then send you a link for you to join our membership platform Coacha.

RIDER INDUCTION COURSE: INFORMATION

Rider Induction courses cost of £20 per rider. We typically schedule induction courses in March/April and September/October - dependent on demand.

The induction course enables our qualified coaches to ensure each rider has sufficient skills and techniques to be able to safely join one of the club’s regular Saturday coaching groups and is also used to assess the most appropriate group for the rider.

In some instances, riders can be fast tracked into the coaching groups if they can demonstrate appropriate skills and experience at the start of the induction course.

Once we offer your child a place on a rider induction course, please note that you will need to complete and submit a British Cycling Parental Consent & Data Protection Notice before attending the first session – we will send a link for you to do this via our online membership platform Coacha.

RIDER MEMBERSHIP: FEES AND INFO

It’s important that Sulis Scorpions riders commit to attending sessions regularly rather than on an ad-hoc basis, therefore the rider membership fee of £15/month is payable by monthly direct debit, year round.

The number of sessions offered per month will vary between 2 and 5 depending on the number of weekends in the month, and school / bank holidays arising. The monthly fees are payable even if the rider is unable to attend due to family holidays, illness or for other reasons.

We book the trach each Saturday from 9am-12pm, with just a few exceptions, this allows to use the track at Odd Down for Family riding when there aren’t any formal coached sessions.

AGES 6-15: YOUTH MEMBERSHIP

The £15 monthly fee effectively covers both a membership fee and the monthly session fees. This is payable once a rider successfully completes the induction course and joins a coaching group.

AGES 16-18: JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP

Junior riders aged 16 to 18 years who take part in coaching sessions will continue to pay the standard £15 monthly fee. Those junior members who act as regular volunteers or coaches may be exempt from the monthly fee, at the club’s discretion.

REDUCED FEES

For families in receipt of Universal Credit, we offer reduced fees of £5 per rider per month (and reduce the cost of the Induction to £5). We simply ask for evidence to be provided to our Welfare Officer to access these reduced fees - to contact our Welfare Team please select the welfare option in the form on our Contact Us page.

In addition, if families have a 3rd (or more) rider, we reduce monthly fees by 50% (£7.50).

ADULT MEMBERSHIP (COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS)

Adult Membership is for those aged 18+ who act as regular volunteers or coaches. There is no membership fee, but by asking you to formally join the club we ensure that all appropriate legal and safeguarding conditions are met.

All Coaches and certain volunteer roles require some additional safeguarding steps, including references and DBS checks – we will provide all the necessary help to make this process as efficient as possible.

COACH AND VOLUNTEER MEMBERS

Our thriving cycling club relies on a friendly team of coaches and volunteer members, and we are always on the lookout for fresh input. There are all sorts of ways to get involved, for example:

  • Become a coach and lead a group at our regular Saturday morning sessions (we’ll help you qualify.)

  • Join our active and friendly committee that meets regularly to manage and direct club activities.

  • Become a club volunteer, where we have a wide range of roles that enable the club to operate, including helping with Coaching and Race delivery at the circuit, as well as ‘Behind the Scenes’ roles that help the club operate.

Please see our Volunteering page for more details of ways you can help.

MEMBERS – KEEP YOUR ACCOUNT UP TO DATE

To look after the ‘paperwork’ side of running the club efficiently, Sulis Scorpions uses the Coacha membership platform.

It is a condition of membership that parents and volunteers keep this information up to date, especially the emergency contact details, and any relevant medical info, that may be required as a result of an incident.

Every member is issued with a unique and secure Coacha account login, and should use this to:

  • Update their personal details.

  • Agree to the Club’s Code of Conduct.

  • Agree to the Parental Consent for riders.

  • Add details of any medical considerations for riders.

  • Add Emergency Contact details by maintaining Next of Kin contact information.

  • Change their password.
