We have booked a coach for travel from Odd Down to Newport, and
this will leave Odd Down at 10am sharp for arrival at Newport in time
for our track booking from 12 to 2pm. After our track session
ends, we will return to Odd Down at approximately 4pm.
Places are limited to 16, we intend to have two groups of 8
riders, and depending on demand we will have a group of novices
(never ridden at the velodrome before) and a group of improvers
(can ride confidently around the track). The minimum age for
riders at the track is 11.
The cost of the trip will be £20, which covers travel, track
hire, coaching at the velodrome and bike hire. The cost has been
subsidised by Sulis Scorpions.
If you are interested in a place on the trip, then please respond
to email@example.com by 19th January. We will confirm allocation of places on 20th December.
There are limited spaces for parents to come along on the coach to
spectate (no charge), please let me know if a parent would like a
seat on the coach.
We will have at least three more trips to the velodrome in 2019,
so don't worry if you miss out this time.
If you have any questions, please ask Jason (firstname.lastname@example.org).
After the success of last year’s Winter and Spring 1-day track and circuit sessions (South Days), the Regional Board and its Youth Work Group want to capitalise on this and prepare riders in a more focused approach to the demands of what is to be expected at national competition. The intention is to run a 1 day camp at the end of January for road, track & MTB XC then a 2 day camp early season which will also include BMX.
The aims of the camps are to develop riders not just physically (although this will be playing a major part) but also mentally, which will incorporate a series of skills-based sessions.
In previous year’s, following representation at Inter Regional events and the Youth Tour of Scotland, Team Managers and Coaches have fed back a common theme that riders are not prepared fully for this level of competition and as a result this then has a longer-term effect on their racing once they reach junior competition and beyond.
The training camps will not just focus on national competition. In order to prepare a rider’s endurance a 5 race Youth series, with events up to a national distance (up to 60km) has been organised with our colleagues in the South West Region. This will provide riders with a specific targeted level of racing without the need to travel all over the country. This series of races should be viewed as step 2 in a 3-step race progression: 1 being local and regional races, while step 3 being the National Circuit series. The series will be as follows:
Saturday 09 March 2019 – Odd Down Sports Ground, Bath
Saturday 30 March 2019 – West Point, Exeter
Saturday 20 April 2019 – West Down Camp, Salisbury
May 2019 (date tbc) – Thorney Island, Emsworth
Saturday 24 August 2019 – West Point, Exeter
In addition to attendance at the weekend camps the race series above, together with individual performances at the Castle Combe Easter Classic and the Regional Circuit Race Championships at Winchester, will form part of the selection process in entering a Boys’ and Girls’ Team to represent the South Region in the 2019 National Youth Circuit Series.
The Youth Work Group will also be working across MTB XC & BMX in the region to look at what can be done in both of these to further develop from a racing perspective.
A brief summary of what to expect at the Training Camp is as follows:
Dates: Sunday 27 January 2019 (Second camp date tbc)
Cost: Free of Charge to South License holders
Eligibility: Youth A and Youth B for road, Juvenile & Youth for MTB XC
Content: The day will comprise of both on and off bike sessions with the AM session starting with a workshop followed by on the bike endurance based on the track (Road bikes). A lunchtime workshop will be followed by a track bike session if dry (rollers if wet) and an MTB specific session off site.
All sessions will be planned and delivered by BC qualified coaches to a minimum Level 2 Discipline Specific award.
The next step: Please send your name, Youth category, licence number, discipline(s) & club to: YouthWorkGroup@outlook.com
All riders should be racing at a minimum of regional level and in the event of over subscription, priority will be given to those Youth & Youth A riders racing Nationally or looking to do so.
The Youth Work Group and a host of volunteer staff look forward to hearing from you.
Enjoy the experience.
The annual Xmas party - awards and party food at St Luke's, Hatfield Road, Bath. BA2 2BD
We will be celebrating everyone’s participation in the club this year as well as presenting awards to winners and welcoming new members. It’s a great opportunity to socialise and meet the coaches, committee and volunteers too.
We’ll have a special Scorpions team quiz and plenty of pizza and nibbles. To help us with planning and especially catering we would be grateful if you could let us know how many from your family will be there. If you haven’t replied already please email email@example.com
The event is funded by the club and we’ll be supporting the youth committee’ charity collection so please bring some spare change if you’d like to donate to their chosen charity, Julian House Bike Workshop. This local organisation creates opportunities for vulnerable people to make a positive move into independence and employment through training in building, repairing, servicing and selling bikes. They also give customers reliable and excellent value bicycles and maintenance.
We’re putting together a slideshow of photos to show what the Scorpions have been up to over the year so if you have any to contribute that would be great. You can share using Twitter (@sulisscorpions) or email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Wear whatever you like but it would be a great excuse to dust off the Christmas jumper and get in the spirit with a bit of sparkle.
Thanks and see you there
