Level 2 and Level 3 Bikeability Courses

Posted by Matt Shonfeld on 10 August 2017

I have previously run level 2 and level 3 bikeabilty courses for Sulis Scoprions with much success. Bikeability training is about learning to ride safely on the roads – level 2 on quiet residential roads and level 3 in busier, commuter type traffic.

I am proposing to run another series of courses at the start of the new term. I will be teaching on Saturdays 16th, 23rd and 30th September. Children will need to attend all three weeks  to pass their course.  According to demand lessons will be either  9-11am, 11.30-1.30pm or 2-4pm.

Level 2 is suitable for any children aged  9yrs and older who have completed their induction course at Sulis and are good riders. I can take 6 children per group and we will spend 6hrs doing on road training over 3 weeks (3x2hrs). The syllabus includes basic road positioning, how to pass side roads, cars and obstructions, how to manage junctions  and understand the information around telling them as road users how to behave.

Level 3 is for older children – minimum age is 12yrs although works better if they are 13/14yrs. The children need to be confident riders with good road presence and to have passed their level 2 certificate. Level three is a maximum group of 3 riders per instructor and we spend the first week (2hrs) refreshing level 2 skills and the following two Saturdays (2x2hrs) on level 3 riding. The syllabus here includes riding on roads with a speed limit of 30mph and above, negotiating hills, multi lane traffic, filter lanes, roundabouts, traffic lights, dealing with queuing traffic and riding in groups both on and off road.

The cost of each course is £10 per child for level 2 and £15 per child for level 3. This is subsidised by BANES.

If you are interested please get in touch and I will be happy to send on full details and consent forms. If you have any questions I will also be happy to answer them.
